Pakistan-Iran border to remain open 24 hours during Muharram

ISLAMABAD/TEHRAN: Pakistan and Iran have agreed to strengthen cross-border cooperation including facilitation of Zaireen (pilgrims) for upcoming holy months of Muharram and Arbaeen that would ensure safer and efficient religious journey for thousands pilgrims.

The agreement which took place during Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s meeting with his Iranian counterpart Eksandar Momeni in Tehran. The high-level talks took place with top officials from both sides in attendance.

Iran will also provide tents and food for 5,000 Pakistani pilgrims in Mashhad.

The two sides also discussed increasing the flights to these destinations and possible sea routes to reduce the pressure on land routes.

Security was also on the table with both ministers pledging to reinforce their stance on illegal immigration, human trafficking and drug trafficking. Strengthened cooperation of border security troops was singled out as a common interest.

Naqvi thanked Iran for taking care of Pakistani pilgrims for a long time and promised that he would try to get released the Iranian fishermen who has inadvertently entered into Pakistani territory.

The partnership is an important move in regional working together and religious facilitation as well, more evidence of closer links between the two bordering nations.
